Fellows of 2019
“Being an IAC Fellow has really made me feel valued despite my age and lack of experience. My experience has served to cultivate my passions and establish priceless relationships with people I would normally never be able to meet.”
- Alec
Alec Louis Candidato recently graduated from The Browning School and will be attending Harvey Mudd College in the fall. In high school, Alec was the leader of his robotics team, science bowl team, Asian affinity group, and Student Equity Diversity Committee. His robotics team, sponsored by IAC, ended its season as the NYC Champions for the FIRST Tech Challenge.
Last summer, Alec worked at Dotdash as a front-end web developer and created a user-interface for one of their databases. Alec is looking to continue his interest in robotics by studying engineering in the future.
“This fellowship has far exceeded every single one of my expectations—job placement, professional networking, group bonding trips. I’ve not only grown as a full-stack software developer but I’ve also met new people and learned the ins and outs of the workplace. I thank IAC, Suzanne, and The Daily Beast for giving me such a uniquely well-rounded experience!”
- Janelle
Janelle Cheung is currently a rising sophomore at Stanford University. There, she loves the sunny California weather, biking around campus, and studying computer science, her prospective major. In Poly Prep, her middle/high school, she was the President of Asia Society, gave tours for the Blue Key Society, and worked behind the scenes as head of the sound crew team for theater productions for five years. Outside of school, she also served as the Head of Math for the SAYC Tutoring program. At Stanford, she is a member of the hip-hop dance team Dv8 and is exploring several CS-focused student organizations.
During the 2019 summer, Janelle worked with The Daily Beast as a full-stack engineer where she contributed to the website both frontend and backend. For her last project, she kick started a new article recommendation module that was to be placed at the end of all articles on the site. She is thrilled to be back at IAC this summer and is excited to learn new things.
“This past summer I was able to do things I never have been able to do before. IAC fellows transformed a normal internship into one filled with enriching trips like visiting the Whitney Museum and sailing on the Hudson. IAC made this past summer unforgettable.”
- Jillian
Jillian Dominguez is an incoming freshman at Brown University. She plans to major in computer science but also has other interests such as painting and drawing.
Her first internship at IAC fellows was at Dotdash where she used java to develop a tool for the backend team.
“My summer at IAC was amazing. I got to work on high-level tasks ranging from mobile app development to cyber security research, which I think is very unusual for a high school intern. As a student interested in Computer Science, the work I did allowed me to explore my intellectual curiosity. I greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to pick the brains of high-level executives, and left each meeting with invaluable information. I look forward to my future with IAC!”
- Mithun
Mithun (Mit) Ramesh is a rising sophomore at Brown University, where he is studying computer science and economics. A graduate of Trinity High School, Mit left Trinity having been the Executive Head of the SAYC Tutoring program as well as a member of the Student Diversity Leadership Council, the Model UN team and the Model Congress team. At Brown, Mit is a member of the South Asian Students Association leadership board and is also looking to become a more active participant in one of Brown’s community service organizations.
Mit is returning for his second IAC Fellows internship in the IT Corp department this summer. He worked with the IT department in 2019 where he mainly focused on security breaches and identifying hacker techniques. In the future, Mit is interested in learning more about Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and its potential applications to various industries.
“IAC supported my personal and professional growth in a way I never even thought possible. My favorite part of this summer had to be the mentorship and networking opportunities, which I would not have had access to without this program. I ended up having meetings with executives across many of IAC’s brands (and beyond) so it felt less like an impersonal institution and more like an extended family.”
- Tiwalayo
Tiwalayo (Tiwa) Eisape is a PhD student focused on Brain & Cognitive Science at MIT . A graduate of Boston College, where he studied math, computer science, and philosophy, Tiwa is broadly interested in the neurological underpinnings of cognition and the implications they have on artificial intelligence. A Gem Consortium Scholar, Tiwa will study and engineer cognitively plausible deep learning language models while at MIT. In the summer of 2019, Tiwa completed his first IAC Fellows rotation at Vimeo, where his manager indicated “he had some very significant accomplishments, most notably Tiwa developed and trained machine learning models that would help us better understand text and video.” Tiwa is first generation Nigerian American from New Jersey, and A Ronald E. McNair Scholar.
